After difficult off-trail forest hiking in the Adirondacks, the route regained the path and reached Long Lake in the late afternoon. A rest day was needed, so a motel in Long Lake village was booked for two nights. A seaplane was taking tourists for aerial views of the lake and surroundings. The pilot agreed, for a fee, to fly the hikers to the far end of Long Lake the next morning. This allowed them to rejoin the trail and make up lost time.
