The first hike together was in Spring 1971 while studying at Sheffield University. A stretch of the Pennine Way was walked over several days, staying in Youth Hostels. The most difficult element was dense mist on the first day, requiring navigation from one cairn of rocks to another—the limit of visibility. It was a gentle warmup to more challenging hikes to come.
