The love of walking began during school breaks spent with grandparents in a small flat in Clapton, Hackney. After lunch, while the grandparents snoozed in their armchairs, the children were expected to remain quiet. Chess was followed by long walks. Peter secured a London Transport guide of walks around London, and the brothers would set out by trains, buses, and Green Line coaches to the countryside surrounding London and walk all day. The appreciation and wonder of countryside and nature grew from those early years.
