vermeer's "the milkmaid"

Leaded window

By hello

Light source and compositional engine. The leaded window at the left is the principal source of daylight, a device repeatedly associated with Vermeer’s domestic interiors. The broken and irregular panes help explain the varied, granular light that falls across the table, bread, jug, and the maid’s face. Perspective studies of Vermeer’s interiors often treat the window frame, table edge, and figure as key structures organizing the scene.
