A vanished canal once linked the Anacostia, the Potomac, and the old Tiber Creek drainage system. In 1871, the Tiber Creek portion was covered over, and the canal’s route became part of the city’s buried hydrology—one of those rare waterways that still exists, mostly, as a rumor under the pavement.
