The vanished creek that once crossed what is now central Washington, D.C., eventually pushed into subterranean channels and engineering schemes. Few waterways have had a more civic transformation: from natural stream to urban nuisance to hidden engineering object. Its story is one of the city’s best examples of water being made to behave in public, then disappearing from sight.
