A former moat zone that once helped define the defensive and watery edge of old Berlin. Its later transformation into an urban district is a classic city trick: first the water protects you, then it inconveniences you, then it becomes a street name. Even when the moat is gone, the old boundary still haunts the block pattern and open spaces.
