The former course of the Bièvre, a stream that once served craftsmen, laundries, and the less glamorous necessities of medieval and early modern Paris. It was eventually buried as the city modernized, which is a polite way of saying that Paris hid its messier water history beneath the elegant version. The lost stream is a reminder that the Latin Quarter was once a working waterscape, not just a place of books and cafés.
