lost waterways and buried channels

Damrak Former Canal Edge

By hello

A former canal edge now absorbed into the urban core, where water once performed both transport and defense. Amsterdam’s modern streets still hint at the geometry of the old harbor and canal system, even where the canal has been narrowed, altered, or filled. The city’s water history is famously practical, but also delightfully stubborn: even when canals are no longer doing the same job, the layout keeps reminding everyone who was there first.
