lost waterways and buried channels

Hidden Chicago River Branch Downtown

By hello

This downtown block sits over a vanished river branch once threading through the commercial heart of the city. The former channel was straightened, filled, and overbuilt as the city grew upward and denser. What makes it memorable is the contrast: a place now known for sidewalks and office towers once had enough water to matter to boats, industry, and flooding alike. The river is still in the neighborhood, but the old branch is now a ghost in the street pattern.
