This part of the city once carried water in defensive and commercial forms before later rebuilding reduced the visible trace to fragments and alignments. Former canals and moats are especially mischievous survivors: they often vanish most completely in the very places where they once mattered most. What remains is usually a curve in a street, a change in elevation, or a suspiciously watery name.
