An old stream corridor was converted into a sewer route as the city expanded, a familiar fate for waterways that once ran in the open. The present-day alley and surrounding blocks keep the memory of a creek that was tidied away rather than celebrated. Urban improvement, as it turns out, can be a very effective form of river vanishing.
