The Zanja Madre was Los Angeles’s first major aqueduct, a hand-dug water ditch that once carried life to the Pueblo. Later improvements buried, rerouted, and overbuilt much of it, leaving the city with a water system that helped shape its earliest growth and a stubbornly invisible underlayer of civic history.
