The Red Canal was an 18th-century Saint Petersburg waterway dug between 1711 and 1719 to help drain marshy ground between the Moyka and Neva. It was filled in during the late 1770s, and the former channel helped define the west edge of what is now the Field of Mars area. (en.wikipedia.org)
