Once a substantial West Philadelphia stream, Mill Creek was enclosed within an enormous sewer during the nineteenth century. The buried creek did not stop shaping the city: the old floodplain remained unstable, contributing to flooding, subsidence, and structural problems above the hidden channel. Its valley is still readable in the broad depression running through West Philadelphia, especially along the line of 43rd Street.
