Dock Creek was one of colonial Philadelphia's defining waterways, draining a large part of the early city and forming a useful inlet near the first settlement. As the city grew, the marshy channel became increasingly polluted and was gradually covered over. By the nineteenth century the creek had effectively been converted into a sewer, but its former course still underlies part of the street plan and the archaeology of Old City.
