Victor Ash's giant black-and-white stencil mural has become one of Berlin's most recognizable pieces of street art. Created in 2007 as part of the Backjumps – The Live Issue project, the 22-by-14-meter figure floats above Kreuzberg with no visible face, only a dark void behind the visor. Berlin's official cultural portal ties the work directly to Cold War symbolism: astronaut in the West, cosmonaut in the Soviet sphere, with the mural sited near the former border so that the city's divided history becomes part of the image.
