Style: Satirical village-wide muralism blending villagers, politicians, celebrities, and cartoon characters. Staro Zhelezare is one of Europe's most unexpected mural villages. Summer painting campaigns led by artists Katarzyna Piriankov and Ventsislav Piriankov, together with students, turned ordinary village walls into an outdoor gallery where local residents appear beside world leaders, art-history references, and pop-culture figures. The visual tone is humorous, politically alert, and deliberately surreal. What gives the place its charge is the collision of scales. The village is small and agricultural, set in the Thracian plain, yet its walls speak the language of world events. Murals here can be witty, affectionate, or sharply topical, but they remain tied to doorways, courtyards, and lived-in houses. That makes the experience feel less like a conventional street-art district and more like a social portrait of a village in conversation with the world.
