By hello
Covering the exterior of The Women's Building as well as parts of its interior stair and entrance, Maestrapeace is one of San Francisco's defining feminist murals. Completed in 1994, it was created through a multi-generational collaboration led by Juana Alicia, Miranda Bergman, Edythe Boone, Susan Kelk Cervantes, Meera Desai, Yvonne Littleton, and Irene Perez, with helpers and volunteers. (en.wikipedia.org) The mural layers portraits of women from history and myth with brilliant color fields, swirling ornamental passages, and calligraphic inscriptions of more than 600 women's names. Its authorship and setting matter as much as its imagery: this is activist muralism tied directly to a women-led community center rooted in self-determination, gender equity, and social justice in the Mission District. The work was updated in 2000 and 2010 and underwent a major restoration in 2012. (en.wikipedia.org)
