Mur des Canuts

By hello

A monumental trompe-l'oeil by CitéCréation, first painted in 1987 and revised over time, this wall turns a blunt gable into an illusionistic slice of Croix-Rousse life. Windows, stairways, workshops, reels of silk and neighborhood figures evoke the world of the canuts, the 19th-century silk workers whose labor shaped Lyon's identity. Its style is realistic in structure but theatrical in effect: from a distance it reads like architecture, while up close it reveals painterly wit and a dense social portrait of a workers' quarter.
