Sloat's Dam and Mill Pond

By hello

Originally created in 1792 by Stephen Sloat and later reinforced, this dam powered a sawmill, tannery, and later textile operations on the Ramapo River. The mill shut down after a mid-20th-century fire, but the dam remains mostly intact and is now part of a National Register historic property. (en.wikipedia.org) Construction detail: concrete skin over original stonework, with a surviving stone sluice gate and mill-race traces. (en.wikipedia.org) Why it remains: it is the only mostly intact survivor of the three historic dams that once supported milling here, and the county has worked to preserve the area for passive recreation.
