Oświęcim, called Auschwitz by the Germans and Oshpitsin in Yiddish, was the Barber family’s Galician home. Pauline Barber was born here on 26 October 1886. Her parents were Bernard / Dov Berish Barber and Toni / Taube Fischer. Bernard Barber owned a grocery and delicatessen in Oświęcim and was remembered as an authority on the Mishna and an important member of the Jewish community. During the Holocaust, Oświęcim became the site of Auschwitz. Bernard Barber was deported with the remaining Jews of the area and perished in Auschwitz in 1943.
